11 Day Power Play

8 years ago I skated 11 days straight playing in the world’s longest hockey game helping to raise $1.2 million dollars to benefit Roswell Park and sponsor clinical trials for a new way of treating cancer known as Immunotherapy. The Game was called The 11 Day Power Play!

I have participated every year since, including the second record breaking event known as the Frozen 40! I am so proud to be part of an organization that has raised over $11 million dollars; including, $7 million to cancer research, sending 780 kids to Camp Good Days, granting 340 wishes through Make A Wish and supporting continued care at Oshei’s Children’s hospital.

This will be my 8th year playing, but this year is different. I will not be on the ice with my brother Pat as he is receiving immunotherapy treatment at Roswell. This year I am learning firsthand about the research I have been raising funds for this past 8 years. I guess you could say it has come full circle.

As with any diagnosis, we had second and third opinions for the best available treatments from what we understood the be the leading treatment centers across the state and country. We quickly learned the best available treatment was at Roswell Park through Immunotherapy, the same therapy I was so naïve about just 8 years ago.

This year I am skating for Pat. I have witnessed firsthand what it takes to battle this disease. I also am thankful to have Roswell Park in Buffalo and all it has to offer. We have always said “skating 11 days is nothing compared to what it takes to battle cancer”! If I didn’t believe that before! I Believe that Now!

I am playing from 6 am to 8:50 am Friday June 20th. I am proud to act as captain of our Hutch’s Tuesday Night Hockey team that is approaching $11,000 in money raised. While my hips have worn through the years and I will be challenged by the 3 hour skate, Playing hockey for 3 hours is nothing compared to what it takes Battling Cancer!
If so inclined, please donate to my page and help me say “PUCK CANCER”
