Those of you who know me know that I am passionate about playing hockey.
When the 11 Day PowerPlay first opened registration to the general public, I was SO EXCITED! I mean, there are countless running events (5Ks, half-marathons, etc.) that serve as fundraisers, but you also know that I DON'T run - not even after the ice cream truck! This was my chance to FINALLY contribute to a worthy cause while doing something I love.
As a result, I have participated annually since 2019 - well, minus the COVID year (we played ball hockey instead, and it wasn't nearly as much fun) and the two years I was out recovering from knee surgery. But I've been back every year since 2023, and this year is more important to me than ever.
This year, I am playing in honor of my mom, who was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer.
Even though she doesn't live here (and therefore did not have her treatment at Roswell), I know that there are plenty of people like her in our community. And I want to help them, even if it is in such a small way.
The question is: can you - will you - help me, help them? I am looking for donations to support my shift, and no amount is too small.
For those who may be interested in watching the event, the "game" starts on Thursday, June 17th, in the evening, and runs until Sunday, June 28th. It all takes place on the main rink at HarborCenter (downtown, next to the Key Bank Center). Admission is free, of course (because who in their right mind would pay to see a bunch of old beer league guys skate - poorly - for three hours at a time?)
My shift with the Buffalo Skate Goats is on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 6-9 am. And if you know me at all, you know how serious I am about this, because you know how much I HATE mornings!!! But since I hate cancer even more, I will be out there, playing for the cause.
