I am excited that I was chosen to be one of the 40 players to play in a hockey game for 11 days to raise money for some great organizations. The goal is $1.1M and I am sure we will get to our goal. This year I am playing in honor of three people and hope some day we can kick cancer's ass.
The first is Dr. Stephen Goldstein who lost his battle last year after an 18 month struggle with brain cancer. Anyone who knew Stephen would tell you that he was the most generous guy and always had a smile on his face. People gravitated to listen to him and he was always the first to give everyone a big hug. He left behind 3 small sons and his wife Melanie. The world lost a great one when he passed and anything I could do for his name is my honor.
The second I am playing for is Michael Mendola. Mike had been battling lung cancer since 2019 and passed away this year. I worked with his daughter Dana back at my Advantage days in 1990 and let me tell you she is one tough cookie. She has beaten cancer twice and figure Mike rubbed off on her. I never met Mike but know he will be watching over me for the 11 days.
The final person will be my mother Barbara Kaplan who passed about 4 years ago. She was with me last time for all 11 days as I had her scarf tied to the back of my pants. She would have loved this event and been watching most of my shifts.
I need your support! I am one of forty players playing in the world's longest hockey game to fight cancer outside in the elements. That's right 252 hours of hockey! Proceeds of the event will support cutting-edge cancer research and wellness programs at Roswell Park, Make-A-Wish WNY, Camp Good Days and Roswell Park and Oishei Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Program.
