Hockey has always been a huge part of my life, but it's about more than just the game for me.
Every time I step on the ice, I play for my grandma, Carol Lempges, who passed away on December 24, 2019, after battling Glioblastoma. She was one of my biggest supporters and continues to motivate me every day. Even though she's no longer here physically, I know she's watching over me. She's my guardian angel both on and off the ice, and I carry her with me every time I put on my skates.
Being asked to join the Kashino Crusaders means a lot to me for another special reason. Kash and my grandma grew up together in North Evans, New York, so there is a personal connection that makes this opportunity even more meaningful. Knowing that connection makes me feel even more honored to be part of this team and this event.
I was also asked to participate in support of the Deaglan's Drummers. Being able to represent their team and help raise money in the fight against cancer is something I am incredibly proud to be a part of.
I also want to play in honor of Michael "Mikey" Reinard, a very close friend of my family who was taken far too soon by cancer. Mikey was one of those people who could make anyone laugh. He was just as loving as he was funny, and he had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome. He left an impact on absolutely everyone he ever met, and his memory continues to live on through the countless lives he touched. As I take part in this event, I'll be skating for Mikey too, and for all those who have lost loved ones to cancer.
As I take part in this 11-Day Power Play, I'll be giving everything I have on the ice while supporting a cause that impacts so many families. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. Your encouragement means more than you know.
Most importantly, this is for my grandma, for Mikey, and for everyone who continues to battle cancer. Every shift, every stride, and every moment on the ice is dedicated to them.
The 11 Day Power Play helps fund cutting-edge cancer research and wellness programs through Roswell Park, Make-A-Wish WNY, Camp Good Days, the Golisano Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Program, and The Petey Fund.
